There is a stone at the top of every stone archway that nothing else can hold without. It doesn't carry more weight than the other stones. It carries the right weight, in the right place — sitting exactly at the center of the load, refusing to lean toward either side. Remove it, and the arch doesn't lose a piece. It falls apart entirely.
That's the idea this whole world is built on. Most people spend their life leaning one way or the other. Some get so certain of who they are that they stop moving — they calcify into a version of themselves that was true once and stopped being examined. Others get pulled so far by doubt, by other people's opinions, by the constant noise of who they're supposed to be, that there's nothing solid left underneath them at all. Neither one is stability. One just looks like it.
“Neither one is stability. One just looks like it.”
I built Keystone — the app, the streams, this whole account of a world — because I've spent most of my life on one side of that arch or the other, and I got tired of pretending it was fine. This is what it looks like to actually try to find the center: build something real in public, question everything I believe out loud, get it wrong sometimes, and keep going anyway.
This document, and everything cataloged here, is the record of that attempt. Not a highlight reel. An account.
If you're here, you're probably somewhere on that same arch. Welcome in.
